While the sustainability and future of Indian Classical music among the youth has been debated upon, there are in fact many young, passionate musicians who explore different paths to keep this genre alive and relevant. Well trained in the Classical discipline, their approach to creative collaborations, use of modern day technology, bending rules of performances, and cutting edge music videos are just some of the ways in which contemporary musicians are creating interesting Classical content - reaching a wider spectrum of audiences than ever before. Panelists will explore varied approaches to keeping Classical music pertinent in modern musical contexts and spaces.

  • Jyotsna Srikanth

    Jyotsna Srikanth Musician, London International Arts Festival / UK, India

    Jyotsna Srikanth is an Indian violinist known for her versatility and ability to collaborate with different genres seamlessly and with ease. She is rooted in South Indian Classical with a formal Western Classical music education, and has flourished as both a performer and composer exploring a crossover between Indian music and a variety of world music and contemporary flavours. She has been featured in many major global music events and venues like WOMAD, BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. She was conferred the Fellowship from the Trinity College of Music, London for South Indian Carnatic music, and is also the Artistic Director of the London International Arts Festival and Dhruv Arts in London. She was recently featured with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Wembley Stadium, and has played violin for nearly 300 Indian and international films. Currently, she is working on numerous large scale music experiments.

  • Swarupa Sawkar

    Swarupa Sawkar Musician, Filter Coffee / India

    With an experience of playing the Tabla for over 20 years, Swarupa a disciple of Ustad Allarakha & Ustad Zakir Hussain, plays the whole gamut of percussion instruments, from the Djembe and Darbuka to the Cajon and Timbale. One half of the Ethnotronic collaborative duo ‘Filter Coffee’, Swarupa is responsible for the hypnotic grooves and is known for her own signature & inventive style of blending beats with fiery Tabla Bols. She has recently collaborated with A.R. Rahman on MTV Unplugged and has also marked her place in the Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ list of 2015. Having played a stint as A&R Manager - Indian Repertoire at EMI Music India she also has deep understanding of the business of music.

  • Rithvik Raja

    Rithvik Raja Carnatic Musician / India

    Rithvik is a versatile and accomplished musician, rooted in the South Indian Classical Music tradition, popularly known as Carnatic Music. He is a disciple of Vidvan Shri T.M. Krishna. Having risen steadily over the last decade through constant hard work, dedication and introspection, he has now carved a distinct niche for himself. His music is fresh, vibrant and spontaneous with a natural flair. Coupled with a voice that is highly sensitive and deep, his pitch perfect singing is honest and sincere. An aesthetically conscious artiste who gives priority and focus to subtle nuances and wholehearted emotion, his renditions are punctuated with abundant creativity. He is one of the youngest musicians to travel all around the world for concerts, including the USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi. He has given many lectures and has conducted a number of workshops. He has extensively participated and won many prestigious competitions and holds a number of awards and recognitions. He has also been blessed with the good fortune of sharing the stage with many senior and top ranking artistes. He contributes to the world of arts in many ways. He works closely with a number of organisations to create awareness for the arts, which include Svanubhava, Avartana Foundation, Madrasika and YACM. He writes regularly on varied subjects pertaining to music, and is widely reviewed and highly appreciated by connoisseurs and critics. An extraordinary musician and a sensational artiste in the making.
